GENOCIDE!

I think we should get involved to a certain extent. If we get too involved in another countries affairs then the country may look at it as an act of war or hostility. We want to help, not obliterate a country because they think we are invading them. I think the best way to help is from a distance and to help by trying to get the people to over throw the current dictator and help by sending money and/or food.

Censoring

I believe that censoring high schoolers is wrong. People need to know the truth and educate themselves about things in history. If we do not learn from our mistakes in history, it will repeat itself. The rape of Nanking is a good example, the japanese tried to cover it up and if you talk about it in japan you could get arrested. Also the bataan death march is not talked about in U.S. history books or in classrooms. The bataan death march was about 75,000 american soldiers surrendering to the japanese. The japanese then made the soldiers walk 60 miles through harsh environments and about 6,000-11,000 soldiers died. If the soldier stopped moving or fell a japanese soldier would behead them.

Cinderella man

In Cinderella man the main character is James J. Braddock, a famous boxer during the great depression era. He had a loving wife and 3 children. He was a great boxer before black tuesday and once black tuesday came around the boxer refs and cashers rigged his fight as a tie so they wouldnt have to pay him any money for the fight. He then struggled trying to put food on the table for his wife and children. He went to the dock to look for work but usually only worked about one day because thats all they needed help for. Then one day his fight manager told him about a fight that he could possibly do to get a little bit money. He won the fight and was so good in the fight they decided to let him continue fighting. He then went on to fight the world champion and knocked him out. He had won the world championship and had made enough money to feed his kids and move to a nice home.

scopes trail

The scopes trail was very controversial because of the debate between teaching creationism and evolution. Today we do not teach creationism more than a simple concept but we do teach evolution as a scientific concept. It does have to do with science because of Charles Darwin. Its strange how Scopes was arrested and fined $100 back then for teaching something that is normal to teach today in class and we do not teach what he was supposed to teach.

Sacco and Vanzetti

Sacco and Vanzetti were brothers and convicted of murder and robbery. They were from Italy and were anarchists who did not like the american government. They were convicted in Massachusetts in 1920. Many believed they were innocent people and they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. People tried to fight for their innocence because some of the evidence seemed faulty and was thought to be planted.
The first piece of evidence was seven eye witnesses saying they saw the brothers kill and rob. the thing is is they could not even make a positive ID on the suspected burglars and there for that evidence was a little shaky in my opinion. If none of the eye witnesses saw them actually do the crime then really it could have been anyone that they saw doing it trying to frame Sacco and Vanzetti.
The next piece of evidence is a bullet from the crime scene. Ballistics on the prosecutors side said that bullet 3 was fired from Saccos handgun which was a colt. and the scratches from the bullet matched the imprint of the gun barrel but the defense was saying that it couldnt have been fired from Sacco's gun because it didnt link up right.
There was also a cap with a hole in it that was thought to belong to Sacco. It had the hole in it because he would always hang it on a nail and the nail eventually punctured the hat. The hat apperantly did not fit Sacco when he tried it on and the defense attornies think that the hat may have been left by the real murderers or a potential crowd member that gathered the scene after the murder.

topic 7 concept guide

Scopes Trial: John T. Scopes a Tennessee high school teacher, was arrested for attempting to teach his students evolution rather than religion. Scopes was guilty and charged with $100 fine and time in jail but the trail was supposed to be redone on a technicality but was never brought back to trial and he got his $100 back.

Prohibition: An act pushed by women organizations because domestic violence and child abuse were rising. The 18th Amendment limited the manufacture & sale of "intoxicating liquor" but, it did not ban the consumptions, possession, or transportation of liquors. This seems extremely strange but, it was part of the reason Speakeasies started to appear. Speakeasies were a underground (secretive) bar that people would go to for alcohol. In 1932 FDR ran for president and used repealing 18th amendment as his slogan to hopefully win election and passed the 22nd amendment which nullified the 18th.

Flappers: Women who had shorter hair, cleavage, smoked cigarettes, showed her legs, shoulders, and back .

Economic Issues (1920s): Credit became available to consumers but was misused frequently by everyone. Low interest rates on the credit cards. Then a Installment Plan was introduced where you are on a set plan of how to pay back borrowed money.

Dust Bowl: A time of severe dust storms which damaged a lot of property and peoples lives across the midwest. The biggest reasons that the dustbowl started is because of droughts, over farming, and mechanisation. Mechanism had made the work of one man do the work of 20 men and because of that it allowed them to harvest the crops and replant the crops so quickly that they never gave the crops time to recover so the soil would just blow away with the wind.

Agriculture Issues: Were caused by the dustbowl and the dustbowl was mostly cause by mechanisms being invented, which meant people didnt crop rotate and made it easier to plant.

Immigration Policies (1920s): The Immigration Act of 1924 was established where there was a 2% limit of each ethnic group from 1890 census that would be allowed to migrate to U.S. per year.

Nativism: Native-born Americans who think they are better than foriegners

Significant Literary Works (1920s): Ralph Nader: "Unsafe At Any Speed" - Where he talks about cars and how dangerous they are when driving fast. Jacob Riis: " Upton Sinclair: "Jungle" Where he shows how processed meat is made."How The Other Half Lives" - Tells about the living conditions in New York slums in the 1880s Langston Hughes: "Ways of White Folks" - He shows how much racism can destroy people.

Harlem Renaissance: It was the first time African Americans showed their culture and were proud of it.

Sacco & Vanzetti: Italian anarchists convicted of murder and robbery and were executed even though some would say they were innocent.

Labor Issues: A lot of people were unemployed but most were drunks.

Red Scare: The Bolshevik Revolution, Lenin takes Power in Russia, People were afraid of communism and thought foreigners were communists.

Schneck v. The United States: was a trial about schneck accused of being a spy.

acrostic poem

People out and about
Rolling around the town looking for flappers and speak easies
Out of alcohol and in need of more, we need to party
Hush hush do not tell anyone about the speak easy we found last night
In case someone is a cop they may pinch the owner and that would not be good for anyone
Buying booze from the speak easy is interesting, lot of people i dont know
I was out parting last night and there were some pretty ladies showing off their nice gams
To go see my friends is a great night. Im gonna drink from a stressful day at work
In this time i always met people dressed up in nice expensive suits smoking cigarettes and talking about robbing banks
On occasion they ask me if i will deliver money or booze for them
No i always say cause i know where they route is heading... About 6 feet under.

Orginized crime

I learned about all kinds of different gangsters and mobsters from the 1920s. Including John Dillinger, Bonnie & Clyde, and Charles Floyd. These notorious gangsters killed many people and robbed banks for a living. John Dillinger robbed over 24 banks in his short life. Pretty boy Floyd robbed a lot of banks and tried to break a friend out of prison. In the process he and his friends killed 4 federal agents or police. One was a FBI agent and the other 3 were police officers and one was the chief of police
